Out of Curiosity
06.2010 – 12.2010

“Out of curiosity” is the visual presentation, in the form of a curiosity cabinet, of a road trip by an art student, Joël Rabijns. During this trip he explores the educational field of e-culture in Flanders, the Netherlands and Nordrhein-Westfalen. This exploration starts in the Media, Arts and Design Faculty in Genk (Limburg, Belgium). The other visited art educational institutes are Hogeschool Gent (Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten), De Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen, Katholieke Hogeschool Mechelen, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Faculteit Kunst, Media & Technologie), Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln and Fachhochschule Dortmund (Fachbereich Design). Under the guidance of the Social Spaces research group (MAD Faculty) and animation artist Sandy Claes, Joël meets his colleague-students in various locations, collects their e-culture projects in a digital way, brings them home to Limburg and presents them in a curiosity cabinet or Wunderkammer. To create a context and a network around the cabinet at the e-culture fair, Anne Nigten (The Patchingzone) organises a workshop in which the students from the participating schools get together, discuss and exchange thoughts in a hands-on way.
“Out of Curiosity” will be presented on 23rd – 25th of August at the E-Culture Fair 2010 in Dortmund (Germany). The fair is organized by BAM, the Flemish institute for visual, audiovisual and media art, “Virtueel Platform” and “Medienwerk NRW” and is part of RUHR 2010, the European Capital of Culture and ISEA 2010 (16th International Symposium on Electronic Arts). The E-Culture Fair revolves around (cross-disciplinary) projects on (media) technology, art, research and creative industry. Here, companies, schools, universities, research groups and artists from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany will present their work.
