FOOD RELATED

How participatory practices and new media can support changing processes of the circumpolar peoples.

Rosanne van Klaveren studies food related experiences and practices through participatory practices, which she collects at an online platform (www.foodrelated.org) and translates artistically in an interactive roadmovie (NIVA TO NENETS). Using new media in a philanthropically way, she bridges both physical and political barriers when joining the indigenous arctic peoples.

Food is the thematic thread: changing food habits reflect the identity problems and underline the physical aspect within the medial context. Food has the ability to break the ice and to bring people together. FOOD RELATED tries to make the arctic peoples feel food related.

In this research of the artistic value, function and possibilities of participatory practices, the goal is explicitly not the convulsive beholding or romanticizing of traditional habits, but to support the changing the indigenous peoples of the circumpolar north endure.

FOOD RELATED is part of a practice based PhD in the Arts, studied at the Catholic University of Leuven and the Media & Design Academy in Genk, Belgium.
